Coronavirus Emergency Appeal

Appeal For Funds For British Citizens In Need in Spain

The coronavirus outbreak and subsequent lockdown has not only created a medical emergency of unprecedented proportions, it is also creating a financial one for many individuals and families.

For nearly 90 years the British Benevolent Fund has been “the charity of last resort” for UK citizens in Spain. Throughout this present period the BBF has remained fully operational and is responding to the many requests for financial assistance directly, as well as in conjunction with the British consular network and our partner charities across Spain.

The British Embassy and the BBF have been working together to support British nationals in Spain for over one hundred years but never as intensively as this moment in time. The BBF is pulling out all the stops to support British nationals in Spain who are struggling as a result of coronavirus lockdown. For those British nationals trying to return to the UK who are struggling financially the BBF is providing grants for travel and subsistence. For those stranded here or who live here but have lost their livelihood at the moment they have been providing temporary grants to help with bills, accommodation and other basic necessities”. Sarah-Jane Morris, British Consul Madrid

As always, we react speedily and with compassion to all applications for help.

Whilst society has responded with generousity and solidarity to those who are suffering, the role of the BBF is to provide specific financial assistance for those who have no other recourse or option open to them. Due to the unprecedented gravity that this situation has created the scope and number of applications from people seeking our help has increased enormously.
